Gift your old tech for new use
This was the year that redefined having a solid laptop and a decent internet connection for everyone in the family from “nice-to-have” to “gotta-have.”
Schools scrambled to get devices in the hands of their students and parents were faced with figuring out how to get the kids — and usually themselves — all functioning online simultaneously.
You can help. If you’ve got devices that might be repurposed into a ‘second life’ in the hands of someone in need, or if you are looking for places to recycle your end-of-life devices and equipment, here are some places we know of that you should consider :
New Life Technology Group is a nonprofit that recycles, refurbishes and redistributes old computers through its Computers For Kids program. They offer free commercial pickups and accept drop-offs for smaller loads and residential e-waste.
CHaRM stands for Center for Hard to Recycle Materials and is a drop-off facility encouraging reuse. Ninety-six percent of all items brought to CHaRM will be recycled, re-purposed or re-engineered, according to its website.
Goodwill takes a variety of tech components for recycling. “One working computer given to Goodwill is worth 5.3 hours of career counseling. To the person getting the counseling, your old laptop is important. Like, hey-I-got-a-job important,” says its website.
You might make the New Year brighter for someone with that old laptop!
