How Do I Turn Off AI On My Devices?

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly integrated into our daily digital interactions, tech companies like Microsoft, Google and Apple have introduced AI-driven features — Microsoft CoPilot, Google Gemini and Apple Intelligence. While these tools offer advanced functionalities, some people prefer to disable them for privacy or personal reasons. Below is a step-by-step on how to turn off these AI features.

Disabling Microsoft CoPilot On Windows 11:

  • Click on the Start button and select Settings.

  • Click on Personalization > Taskbar.

  • Locate the CoPilot toggle and click to switch it off.

For Microsoft 365 Applications:

  • Open the desired application (e.g., Word, Excel). You will need to do this for each application.

  • Go to File > Options or for Mac click Word (as an example) > Preferences.

  • Click CoPilot.

  • Click to uncheck the Enable CoPilot box.

  • Restart the application.

Disabling Google Gemini in Chrome

  • Open Google Chrome and type chrome://flags in the address bar.

  • At the top of the screen Search for Gemini.

  • Disable any related experimental settings.

  • Restart Chrome.

Disable Gemini in Gmail and Docs

  • Open Gmail or Google Docs.

  • Click on Settings (gear icon) and navigate to Labs or AI features.

  • Disable Gemini-powered features.

Disabling Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence is only available on iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max; any iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later; Mac with M1 or later. iOS 18.1 or later, iPadOS 18.1 or later, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later.

On iPhone or iPad:

  • Tap to open Settings.

  • Scroll down and tap on Apple Intelligence & Siri.

  • Tap to toggle off Apple Intelligence to disable all related features.

On Mac:

  • Click on the Apple menu and select System Settings.

  • Click on Apple Intelligence & Siri.

  • Click to toggle off Apple Intelligence.

While AI features like Microsoft CoPilot, Google Gemini and Apple Intelligence are designed to enhance user experience, it's essential to have control over their activation. Keep in mind that future updates to your devices may actually turn AI back on. Checking your AI settings after an update may be necessary.
